Total and Partial Dental Prostheses

Total and Partial Dentures

Total and partial dentures are artificial sets of teeth used to replace lost teeth. Total dentures are used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when only some teeth are missing. Total dentures are usually made of acrylic material, while partial dentures are made of a combination of metal and acrylic.

Where to use?

These prostheses are used in cases where there are aesthetic and functional losses in missing teeth. While total prostheses are used in the lower and upper jaws in cases of complete tooth loss, partial prostheses are applied in areas where one or more teeth are missing. Both types of prostheses can be used comfortably in the mouth and are durable for a long time with proper care.

When to Use?

Total dentures are applied in cases where all teeth are extracted or lost. They are usually placed after the gums and surrounding tissues have healed, i.e. approximately 8-12 weeks after tooth extraction. Partial dentures are used in cases where several teeth are missing and natural teeth are in place. These dentures can be applied immediately after tooth extraction or after the healing process.
Things to Consider

  • Cleaning: Dentures should be cleaned regularly. It is important to rinse with water after meals and use denture cleaning solutions daily.
  • Dentist Checks: Dentures should be checked regularly by the dentist. This is important to maintain the fit of the dentures and oral health.
  • Removal: Dentures should be removed at night and stored in a clean container with water or denture cleaning solution.

Advantages

  • Aesthetics: Provides an aesthetic smile by replacing missing teeth.
  • Function: Restores chewing and speaking functions.
  • Self-Confidence: Increases the person's self-confidence.
  • Ease: Relatively easy to apply and maintain.

Things to Consider After Application

  • First Days: Mild discomfort and adjustment problems may be experienced in the first days. This will improve over time.
  • Nutrition: Soft foods should be preferred in the beginning and chewing with dentures should be accustomed to over time.
  • Correction: If the dentures cause discomfort or do not fit well, you should consult your dentist and have the necessary corrections made.
  • Maintenance: Maintenance and cleaning of dentures should not be neglected. Denture cleaning brushes and solutions should be used.

Total and partial dentures are effective and widely used solutions for eliminating tooth deficiencies. They can be used comfortably for a long time with proper maintenance and regular checkups.
